Everything is sized to the bookcase, never the other way round, which is why we do not sell a standard model: the rail height, the length of shelving to serve and the shelf depth set the dimensions of the whole set.
How a rail-mounted library ladder works
On a rail system the ladder never rests on the books or the shelves: it hangs from the rail by its hooks and is guided along the floor or in the air by its wheels. This gives a quiet sideways glide and lets you climb with both hands free. The rail also acts as a safeguard: as long as the hooks are engaged, the ladder cannot tip towards the room.
Three decisions before ordering
Read it on the bookcase upright: it is the height of the highest shelf you want to reach. It is the basis for the ladder length, see the table on the sloped or vertical page.
It covers the run to be served plus the width of the ladder. A stop at each end keeps the ladder on the rail, and a shorter rail costs less per linear metre.
Brass or wrought-iron wheels on a round rail, and a rubber wheel on the floor if the ladder reaches the parquet. The choice depends on the floor and on acceptable noise.
Exposed rail or recessed rail: how they compare
An exposed rail is a round tube on projecting brackets, a recessed rail is a profile set into the cabinet work, and the choice drives load, look and installation. The figures below are indicative for a 2.5 m wrought-iron ladder; the actual load is set by the workshop from the support that will carry the rail.

A wrought-iron ladder, not a kit
Each ladder is forged and assembled to order by a partner ironwork workshop: uprights bent hot, rungs riveted or welded depending on the model, hooks fitted to the rail diameter. Wrought iron adds a mass that steadies the ladder as you climb, and a patina that improves with use. Wheels, handrail and end caps can be brass, see the finishes we offer.

Questions to ask before choosing a rail
Is your bookcase fixed to the wall? Is the floor perfectly level? Does a room corner break the run? These three questions decide whether a straight rail is enough or whether a corner rail must be made. We prefer to ask them before making anything rather than after.
Frequently asked questions
Can a rolling library ladder be fitted to an existing bookcase?
Yes, provided the uprights or the wall behind can take the rail fixings. The workshop reviews your photos and dimensions, then tells you whether the rail should be fixed to the uprights, the wall or both.
Does the rail need to run the full length of the bookcase?
No. The rail covers the stretch you want to reach, with a stop at each end. On an eight-metre wall, a four-metre rail in front of the most-used shelves is a common set-up.
How does the ladder hook onto the rail?
Two wrought-iron hooks, carried by the ladder uprights, sit over the rail and guide the wheels. You can park the ladder anywhere along the rail; friction brakes or a foot on the floor hold it in place.
Can the ladder be parked against the wall when not in use?
Yes, with a folding ladder or a parking bay at the end of the rail. Say so when you ask for a quote, because it changes the hook design and the usable rail length.
