Matt black wrought iron, the safe choice
Matt black wrought iron is the most discreet and versatile finish, suited to modern bookcases and old panelling alike. The iron is degreased, protected and then lacquered or oiled, giving a deep black without shine. It only needs regular dusting, and the colour sets off the coloured spines of books.
Patinated wrought iron, the aged look
The patina gives the iron a shaded tone, often brown-black with lighter highlights on the edges, like metal worn by years of use. The workshop applies it by hand, so each piece is slightly different. It suits townhouses, panelled libraries and rooms where a heritage feel is wanted.
Brass: the warm accent
Brass brings a golden light that answers pale wood and leather bindings. It is used for accent parts: wheels, handrail, end caps, or as a full rail for the most decorative projects. Raw, it darkens gradually; polished and lacquered, it keeps its shine longer. Both effects are legitimate, so choose between living brass and fixed brass.

Matching the ladder to the room

A word on durability
A finish is never final: a local touch-up, a fresh coat of oil or wax can extend the life of a well-kept ladder well beyond a decade. Just keep a soft cloth at hand to avoid scratches where hands pass most often.
Frequently asked questions
Does brass tarnish over time?
Yes, raw brass darkens naturally within a few months through contact with air and hands. You can let it age, polish it regularly, or choose lacquered brass, which slows the ageing without stopping it.
Does matt black wrought iron need upkeep?
Very little: a dry or barely damp cloth is enough. Hand and wheel contact points burnish with use, and a local touch-up is possible after a chip.
Can black iron and brass be mixed on one ladder?
It is the most common combination: black wrought-iron uprights with brass wheels, end caps and handrail. It ties the ladder to either a brass or a black rail without a large extra cost.
Is the patina identical from one ladder to the next?
No. A patina is a hand-applied surface treatment, so no two ladders are exactly alike. That is part of the charm, but a sample will help you approve the shade.
