# Fitting the rail

Installing a library ladder rail: height, supports, fixing to uprights or wall, load to allow for and common mistakes. Guidance before you drill.

Overview Fitting the rail is the step that matters most in a library ladder project: a perfect ladder on a poorly fixed rail will never be safe. This page explains the fixing principles, the height to use and the checks to make before drilling.

## Where to place the rail

The rail sits at the height of the highest shelf you want to reach, slightly set back from the plane of the books so the ladder passes without touching them. Two figures fix everything: the rail height above the floor, measured on the upright, and the set-back from the front edge of the shelves. The set-back is generally a few centimetres. The workshop works it out from the depth of your shelving.

## Which support for which fixing

The support determines the fixing, not the other way round. A rail is ideally fixed to the bookcase uprights, or to the wall behind with supports suited to the material.
   Bookcase uprights
Screws through the upright, with a load-spreading washer. The simplest option on a made-to-measure bookcase in solid wood or thick plywood.
   Masonry wall
Anchors suited to the material (solid or hollow), chosen on site. The workshop specifies diameter and depth.
   Stud partition
Reinforcement needed behind the plasterboard, otherwise the fixing will not hold. The rail is then fixed to that reinforcement.

## The load to allow for

The rail must carry the weight of the ladder, that of a person, and the horizontal forces when moving along it; it is not just a static weight. For that reason the working load of the rail is set by the workshop after examining the support. ## Number and spacing of brackets

On an exposed rail, brackets are spread about every 1.2 metres, with one at each end. The wider the spacing, the more the rail flexes. A longer rail or a heavier ladder calls for closer brackets, to be defined on the drawing.

## Installation steps, in order

- Take the rail height on each upright and check it is level with a long spirit level.

- Locate and confirm the support: uprights, reinforcements, masonry.

- Drill using the supplied template, then position the brackets before tightening.

- Set the rail on the brackets, check the play and fit the end stops.

- Hook on the ladder and try it empty along the whole length before loading it.

## Common mistakes

A rail that is not level, an underestimated support and a bracket too far from the end are the three mistakes that recur. A fourth oversight concerns the stops, which are sometimes added “later” yet are the parts that keep the ladder on the rail.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can the rail be fixed straight into a stud partition?

Not without reinforcement. A plasterboard partition cannot carry the load of someone climbing on its own. Aim for a bookcase upright, a reinforcement inside the partition or a load-bearing wall.

### What tolerance is acceptable on the level of the rail?

The rail must be perfectly horizontal: a few millimetres over several metres is enough for the ladder to drift to the low point on its own. We supply a drilling template to avoid this.

### Can I fit the rail myself?

A capable DIYer can do it if the support is solid, but the workshop recommends a carpenter or ordering the installation, since an error in level or fixing is paid for in safety.

### Are end stops needed?

Always. They keep the ladder from leaving the rail and cushion its stop. We supply them with the rail.
